Oh wow… Queen Bowser? I don’t get why the mirror says she’s the fairest in the land other than Peach, dear God who else lives in this place? This episode is, probably actually the second best, I mean I must admit I was prejudiced against it due to it being based on Snow White, but this allows for typical Disney style violence (such as Bowser holding Peach at knife point, it’s nice to see actual danger in a kids cartoon.)

Anyway, this is pretty fun, I mean it’s kinda cool how Mario’s not really the main focus of this episode, and is even on a journey separate from the storyline, he just helps Peach out occasionally. We also get a lot of action, with Mario kicking the Koopaling’s asses twice (although I dunno where Morton goes after the first fight) but the Koopalings are still pretty much generic thugs. I love the part where as apposed to kissing Peach to save her Mario gives her ‘A potion that he got off a goddess in a faraway land’… that is such a WTF solution it makes the next part seem completely mundane by comparison.

We actually see some minions attack Mario, in this case Goombas, then we get more craziness where Mario absorbs all the Toads to grow in size, and kicks Koopaling ass again. Then when Queen Koopa has Peach at knife point, Luigi appears out of nowhere, cracks Bowser’s skull with a mallet and kicks her stomach. Then they throw Bowser out of a window. The end.

Overall, wow, I mean sure it’s pretty silly, but it’s so off the wall it’s great. Also it’s cool to finally see Luigi in this series, even if he has an appearance that would make Venom of Spider-man 3 seem an overused character.

Super Mario Amada Series Episode 2

Title- Super Mario Issun-bōshi

Voices
Toru Furuya as Mario
Miyako Endou as Princess Peach, Toad, Morton Koopa Jr., Wendy O. Koopa
Masaharu Satou as Bowser, Larry Koopa, Iggy Koopa
Naoki Tatsuta as Luigi, Papa, Roy Koopa, Lemmy Koopa, Ludwig von Koopa Toshiko Sawada as Narrator

Episode 2 now, and whilst it’s not as good as episode 1, it’s ok. I must confess I’ve only seen an unsubbed version so I don’t really know what went on but really it’s pretty easy to pick up. Mario’s now this thumb high minish-like kid who was born with a moustache (they always seem to give Baby Mario a stache in the cartoons, yet he’s completely bald faced in the games.) and he wants to see the city. So he asks his parents (who are not fully seen in Tom and Jerry style.) if he can go and they say ‘sure why not?’

He’s given a pin as a weapon and starts sailing in a raft towards town. It’s here that you start to see that despite the pretty crappy animation, the actual designs are practically from the pages of the instruction manual itself, we see various enemies, although they don’t attack Mario, until we see a Lakitu who uses rain and lightning to attempt to drown Mario. I don’t think the guy has an actual reason to try to kill Mario, but as Wizardheimer says, ‘I’m an evil Koopawizard, I don’t need a reason to be mean and nasty, it’s in my nature.’ So I can’t complain with that logic.

Next we get a lot of talk as Peach saves Mario from drowning, then Bowser comes up to her, almost as a mugger, which is a shame as his appearance here seems slightly more badass than the last episode (or the next ‘snigger’) Bowser laughs at Mario and eats him, which gives me two more geek moments. Firstly the fact Bowser eats Mario which is part of the new Mario and Luigi game, and secondly, he attacks Bowser’s insides with his pin, something that is reminiscent of the Yoshi’s Island Battle with prince Froggy. What happens after Bowser spits out Mario sucks. It looks like they’re going to have a fight when Mario cuts off Bowser’s horns. Bowser then runs off crying…

Yes, this episode is the shortest, it is barely based on the games, but I feel that overall the good points make up for it. Even Bowser getting jobbed and being turned into a crybaby mugger or even rapist.

Super Mario Amada Series Episode 1

Title- Super Mario Momotarō

Voices
Toru Furuya as Mario
Miyako Endou as Princess Peach, Toad, Morton Koopa Jr., Wendy O. Koopa
Masaharu Satou as Bowser, Larry Koopa, Iggy Koopa
Naoki Tatsuta as Luigi, Papa, Roy Koopa, Lemmy Koopa, Ludwig von Koopa Toshiko Sawada as Narrator

Right. This is the first of my reviews of the three Amada episodes made in Japan. First a bit of background. Each of these specials were based upon various Japanese fairy tales (one of which is the widely known ‘Snow White’) As such if you’re expecting a full on Mario tale, with the Mushroom Kingdom etc forget it. That’s not to say of course that the characters have different names, they are essentially the same, but are used in the various roles, such as Bowser being an Ogre king, and Peach becoming Snow White. This is important to take into account before seeing these movies.

This first one, is actually probably my favourite so far (although I have yet to see the full Snow White one, and my version of episode 2 has no English Subs.) I enjoy it most, for the fun action and the sheer wackiness of it. Not knowing the Japanese fairy tale, I don’t know how the stories meant to play out, but highlights for me include Mario just appearing one day out of the sky to these elderly couple of Hammer Bros, the fact that they are supposedly Peach’s grandparents (does she have a shell under that dress?) and finally Mario preparing for his adventure by packing a piece.

Me being a geeky sad loser saw three rather humorous things about this film which relate to games which came out a long time after this film. Firstly they all live on small floating planets, (Mario Galaxy) secondly Mario teams up with three characters of an enemy species (Paper Mario) which are a Boomerang bro, Parabuzzy and a Spike. Finally Mario’s aforementioned gun which actually looks slightly similar to a Super Scope (Yoshi’s Safari)

Overall this is the most action packed of the three films, and features Bowser at his most gamelike, trying to force Peach to marry him. Also the Koopa Kids appear, a rarity, but they really are so expendable in this that it’s not really exciting. The fight at the end is pretty good however, especially with Mario and friends fighting all the different Koopas.

Overall my favourite of the three (so far) and a pretty nice film. I really enjoyed the amount of cameos.

Super Mario World episode 13

Title- Mama Luigi (12/7/1991)

Worlds- Dinosaur Land

Well here we are at the final episode, and we get an actual origin episode. Wow. I mean I could complain about how we should essentially of seen this episode as episode 1, and it would of made a great episode to introduce the series, but well, I think we should count it lucky we actually got an origin episode. I mean even the Super Mario Bros Super show didn’t have an origin episode, just the opening song.

This episode is infamous as the fodder of Youtube Poop, with the timeless line ‘that’s Mama Luigi to you Mario’ and ‘Koopa Football Playas, grabbed the Princess’ as well as ‘I fell for hours’ Anyway, this episode is still one of the three must-see episodes of this series (I’m not saying that you need to watch them, but they’re the main episodes you should see if you watch this series, as they’re closest to the games.)

This episode seems to follow the story in the game closely apart from the fact Yoshi is a baby throughout (kinda ironic considering he’ll be baby-fied again in Yoshi’s Story) and the final battle was already done in send in the clowns.

The fact the Princess is actually kidnapped in this episode, which strangely rarely happened in this series or the last one helps add to the ‘main storyline’ feel. Overall one of the three greatest episodes in this series, this one is essentially the game in animated form. Oh also it stars Luigi so that’s another plus for me.

And that’s it. That’s the last Mario cartoon by DIC. Mario did have one final animated appearance, but it’s in a video so rare it will take a long time to track down. The video is called Mario Kirby Masterpiece and also features the only animated appearance of Wario. I must say that this series was pretty disappointing to me, as most of the episodes I hadn’t seen, turned out to be so unrelated to the games, it makes me always look down on the whole series, which isn’t fair as there were some good ones, just like this episode. Overall a pretty good series.

Super Mario World episode 12

Title- A Little Learning (11/30/1991)

Worlds- Dinosaur Land

This is my least favourite episode of the series. Lets get the good points out the way. Well I liked the part about Koopa not allowing any of his Kids to go to school ‘in case they become… urgh… responsible’ Also the way Koopa proudly states he’s illiterate. Yeah… even Koopa himself can’t save this episode.

We get the princess setting up a school and Hip and Hop wanting to go. Not to cause trouble, not to help Koopa, but because they want to do it. I thought we had an episode about racism in store, but instead this is much… much… worse.

The kids get to school, and because they’re Koopas, the cave people start turning up and complaining about their kids being at school with Koopas. Wow, this is actually pretty good, I mean for a kids show, these things have happened in real life, particularly with gypsies who join a school.

It’s while the princess is out to talk to the parents, Oogtar gives the Koopa’s gum and tells them that the Princess likes it when they eat bubblegum. Thus the Koopa’s get in trouble, and they try to get Oogtar back. Then at the very end the Koopalings make an experiment, which goes wrong and almost levels the school, and they get expelled.

Oh wow. Apart from the fact they’re bullied from the start by Oogtar, and they face racial discrimination, and they get expelled at the end. I mean if the whole episode is based around some moral, at least make it make sense.

One really quite funny thing is that this is technically the final appearance of Koopa. To my knowledge none of the episodes before ever had Koopa facing certain death, (I'll edit this if I remember an episode) he usually escaped, whereas this time the room's filling with lava, and we never see Koopa in another episode (the next one's a flashback.) so feel free to guess that he's dead here, just as Mother Brain's still even now stuck in Baseball land running from giant bats and balls. Amazing how after 3 seasons as the main villains each, both these villains get such a strangely mute send off that it's pretty funny.

Overall a horrible episode, nothing fun (other than Koopa) and I still don’t get the message… I mean what’s it mean? Don’t be bullied? Don’t be bullied and fight back? Don’t actually try to make a good science project.

(Funny how I always spend the most time writing about my least favourite episodes...)

Super Mario World episode 11

Title- The Yoshi Shuffle(11/30/1991)

Worlds- Dinosaur Land

Some actual funny cave people? Say it ain’t so! This episode has these 3 awesome cavepeople who never appear again. I mean sure they don’t do much, and they have no personality, but at least they actually fight against Koopa. Whilst I loath episodes where characters play American football, this is fun. It’s also a good way to include Chargin’ Chucks.

Also we get the first appearance in this episode of the Yoshi egg… yeah exciting. More exciting are the appearances of Ninji’s in the crowd and who attack Mario later (whilst Mario’s riding Yoshi)

Finally I liked the appearance of the random Koopa Wizard, I mean does Bowser even know what half these guys are up to, suppose he just sends them out to hang around various places.

Overall a pretty fun episode.

Super Mario World episode 10

Title- Rock TV (11/16/1991)

Worlds- Dinosaur Land

I quite enjoyed this episode. Koopa is the main villain once more, in a way it reminds me of the way Captain N’s third season only had one appearance from Mother Brain. Anyway, Koopa’s at his best here, and his fake TV salesman disguise is pretty funny.

Also there’s a lot of fun in the wrestling match and the fact the two wrestlers were probably killed in the collapsing giant TV was a nice change. I mean I’m not death hungry but seeing implied death is good once in a while. Also a weird appearance from something that will appear many years in the future. Mario hits a block and many mini Marios come out. Something very similar is available in Super Paper Mario, so it’s very strange seeing this. Other than that, we get the Princess actually riding Yoshi, something we haven’t seen yet beyond Oogtar (‘shiver’)

So overall a pretty fun episode, mainly due to Koopa.

Super Mario World episode 9

Title- Gopher Bash (11/9/1991)

Worlds- Dinosaur Land

I really quite like this episode. We have Luigi in another starring role, Yoshi actually is used like a farm animal in this episode, which is pretty good as his role in the original game was essentially an item. Also the cavepeople kinda get really annoying here. It makes you wish they at least made one or two Yoshi’s appear, or dinosaurs or anything but these, well essentially retards (I’m not trying to cause offence, but it’s really the only way to describe them.)

We also get the only appearance of Monty Moles in this episode and the return of Cheatsy. I like the way Koopa just tells Cheatsy to cause trouble then disappears the rest of the episode, kinda makes you wonder whether he just sends his kids off to attack for a moments peace.

Finally I gotta say that it’s pretty graphic seeing Yoshi trying to eat the last Piranha plant, then in the tug of war between Yoshi and the Moles he rips the plants head off, I mean it would be fine if it weren’t for the fact it’s made clear the plant’s at least sentient. Overall a pretty good episode.

Super Mario World episode 8

Title- Party Line (11/2/1991)

Worlds- Dinosaur Land

This is the first episode of this series I ever saw. It’s ok. I mean I like the fact Luigi actually does something, as he never even gets to use any power-ups in this series, I mean no cape, or Fire Flower, he only gets to be invincible in this episode.

We get to see the wigglers return again, in their perpetually angry form. I find this a shame as their main purpose was the fact they’re these slow peaceful creatures who become angry monsters as soon as something happens to them, so it would have been fun to see that animated. Ah well.

One of the annoying things about this is the dinosaur appearing. I mean yeah it’s Dinosaur Land and all that but couldn’t they of tried to make something from the games attack? I dunno what though really. Also Koopa’s missing again.

Overall another ok episode, but the plot of giving the cave people something which they abuse really got old at this point.

Super Mario World episode 7

Title- Born to Ride (10/26/1991)

Worlds- Dinosaur Land

This episode’s ok I guess. It’s good that this is another episode with villains other than Koopa. It’s another Social Commentary episode, this time about gangs.

I think all I can really say I found that good was the bike chase. I particularly found it kinda brutal how one of the bikers gets thrown into the lava pit.

Overall a pretty average episode, at least there’s no Oogtar in sight.

Super Mario World episode 6

Title- King Scoopa Koopa (10/19/1991)

Worlds- Dinosaur Land, Star Road

I really like this episode. It’s pretty good for a social commentary episode. I mean it gets a two for one, with it being about fast food and addictions. A pretty good part is Yoshi and Luigi stealing all the coins they can get from the princess to satisfy their addiction. Of course the idea of them turning into chickadactyls is kinda silly but I suppose it’s an analogy of how they change who they are.

One thing I really like about this episode is that Koopa wins. He gets away with the money and everything. It makes it better that it shows that it still takes away from you when you get caught up in an addiction. Also I really like the chase scene, we get to see Star Road too. Also for once the songs actually quite good.

Overall a personal favourite of mine and a pretty good overall episode.

Super Mario World episode 5

Title- The Night Before Cave Christmas (10/12/1991)

Worlds- Dinosaur Land

Bleh. I guess this episode’s typical. It’s pretty stupid though, as Mario just makes up Christmas at some random time of the year, and that’s about it. Also it’s Oogtar filled fun, so you know it’s going to be annoying. I liked the part with Koopa trying to feed Oogtar to the Dinosaur though.

Oh I forgot the fact that Contemptible Corpmeistle (or something like that.) Koopa steals the toys for his kids. What’s funny is how small they’re appearance is here. They literally are only seen at the very end, and from so far away they seem to be just dots.

Anyway overall, typical Christmas fare. This episode allows Oogtar to take over so you know it will be bad.

Super Mario World episode 4

Title- Ghosts R Us (10/5/1991)

Worlds- Enchanted Forest (Forest of Illusion)

Well here we are. I’d say there are really three must-see episodes in this series for fans of the game. The first is send in the clowns for reasons stated in that review, and this is another one. One thing I find really cool is that there’s an actual full on villain who isn’t Koopa in this episode. Instead we have Wizardheimer, a Koopa Wizard. Pretty funny considering the coincidence of Kamek, another Koopa Wizard being the main villain of Yoshi’s Island 4 years later.

This episode is the first one to feature truly noticeable misnaming. First there’s the Magikoopas becoming Koopa Wizards. Then there’s the Forest of Illusion becoming the Enchanted Forest. This is another one of the main things about this series, the misnaming of things from the games. Still it happens even now in the Pokemon anime with Lorelie/Prima.

One thing I really like is the fact that this episode explains why Yoshi never goes into the ghost house in the games. He’s scared and doesn’t follow Mario in, which adds to the cartoon, and makes the fact Yoshi actually enters a little stronger too.

Anyway, as for the main plot of the episode, it’s pretty fun, despite it introducing the biggest pain in the neck ever seen. Oogtar the Caveboy appears. Urgh. What’s worse is that this guy is supposed to be the replacement of Toad. While Toad can be annoying, he is GOD compared to this guy. It’s funny that when I was saying about how good it was that there was no ‘created for the show’ teen cool guy to familiarise the audience with the world in SMB3. But we get this in SMW and with his ‘bummer Dino-dude’ and ‘mega-Bummer man!’ it’s clear that this guy’s only going to annoy more and more.

Overall a really fun episode, and it’s great to have it set at the ghost house.

Super Mario World episode 3

Title- Send in the Clown (9/28/1991)

Worlds- Dinosaur Land, King Koopa's Coney Island Disco Palace

This episode is probably the series swansong. I love it. It has so many villains show up, a funny part with the whole circus, Koopa fully in control and not following one of his kid’s plans, and the actual final boss from the game. Yes this episode has the only true final battle from the games. Koopa in his clown car (fitting with the theme of the episode) and he drops those balls to crush Mario, throws out the Mecha Koopas, even has the princess in with him. He even gets beaten in the same way, it’s pretty awesome.

This episode also has the appearance of many enemies, those giant dinosaurs who turn into smaller ones, Rex’s, Chargin’ Chucks, Dry Bones, even the Ball on chain and Gray Bowser statues. The outfit Mario wears at the end even looks like the outfit he wears on the box of Mario all-stars. Oh also we get a precursor to Mario Tennis… ok, maybe that’s pushing it.

Overall a great episode. If only this series had more like this. Also gotta love the Twilight Zone Reference.

Super Mario World episode 2

Title- The Wheel Thing (9/21/1991)

Worlds- Dinosaur Land

This episodes pretty good, despite introducing the typical plot of the Mario Bros introducing some modern thing to the Cave People (urgh) and it all going ‘hilariously’ wrong.

The Cave People didn’t annoy as much as they do later, and the whole attitude Mario takes, giving them cars then just letting them get on with it’s pretty funny, adds to his character, whilst Luigi’s out trying to sort out all the problems.

Finally we get the only appearance of Kooky. He looks really weird in this series, but at least he still has the awesome voice, and he’s at his best here, he creates a giant robot dinosaur and starts blowing up Dome City.

Overall a pretty good episode.

Super Mario World episode 1

Title- Fire Sale (9/14/1991)

Worlds- Ice world

Well here we are at the end of an era. The final Nintendo Series to be made by DIC. This series is… ok… I mean it’s good to see Yoshi (especially in a form that’s not his perpetual baby form from Yoshi’s Story. This is good old Lanky Yoshi.) animated. The only appearance outside of the games. Anyway other than that, this series really isn’t that faithful to the games, but that didn’t make the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog series any worse. I guess the animation studio who did season 3 of Captain N did this series too as the quality makes SMB3 look like a work of art. Still as said the Mario style does fit this series, but we still get the constant animation slip-ups.

So without further ado. Yeah, we got the first episode apparently. I really can’t tell as there’s no real turning point, it doesn’t introduce us to the characters, we’re just, there…

Anyway, the episode mainly centres on Yoshi, which I think is really about the only thing that makes this have a ‘first episode’ vibe. Anyway, Yoshi is quite well introduced as a gluttonous coward, and later becomes the hero of the episode, saving everyone. Also Yoshi’s fear of water’s quite good. I’m guessing that’s since Yoshi’s movement is pretty hampered in water, so similar to Sonic he has a fear of water. I enjoyed the whole part on the platform in the sky, with various enemies flying overhead, and seeing Mario actually punch the Goomba’s out of the sky is pretty surprising really.

One thing quite weird is that Kootie Pie Koopa’s still in Ice Land, in the Mushroom World, so we don’t even spend much of the episode in Dinosaur Land. Is this really the first episode?

Anyway overall, a pretty boring episode, which doesn’t really do a good job of introducing us to the new series. Still they did have the Koopa Trooper’s only appearance in this series in this episode, so credit where it’s due.
