The Legend of Zelda episode 4

Title- Kiss ‘N Tell (29/9/1989)

This episodes not too bad. We get a heck of a lot of enemy appearances, from Gibdos to Octoroks to Gleeok. We also get a typical silly riddle type thing that you get in old RPGs. We also get Gannon actually flirting with Zelda, which is a real rarity for these DIC cartoons, as the villains always seem to only kidnap the Princesses for power alone, and don’t care about anything else.

This episode isn’t too bad, I can’t think of any real flaws like with most other episodes, which is why this review is pretty short.

Overall pretty good for this series, but still not really all that great. Also I just noticed, does Link actually eat Sprite at the end, it’s difficult to hear, but it’s almost like a small joke they put in that most people wouldn’t notice…

The Legend of Zelda episode 3

Title- The White Knight (22/9/1989)

Wow. An actually good episode? Well yes. I must admit, I’m a sucker for episodes where the hero has another turn up and show him up. This is just one such episode, and it actually elevates beyond simply being good by doing some things well. Link is actually likeable and we meet the King in all his Alzheimer’s induced glory.

The openings really good, with an actual explanation of why Gannon wants to conquer Hyrule, and a battle with an actual army and a giant monster.

You actually can feel sorry for Link in this episode, he’s never popular in this series and this episode does a good job of showing how he never seems to get anything out of saving Hyrule

It’s not all perfect of course, I mean the way Zelda fell for the White Knight was kinda silly as really he didn’t even show Link up much, he just took out the giant Octorok, whereas Link fought the whole army.

Overall actually one of the series best, lots of game related stuff and a good storyline.

The Legend of Zelda episode 2

Title- Cold Spells (15/9/1989)

Well here we are at episode 2. Where do we go from an opening episode where Gannon disguised as a travelling wizard steals the Triforce? Why to an episode about spring cleaning of course you silly silly readers…

Lets get the good parts out of the way. Well the way Zelda defeated the bird was pretty funny, and… well Gannon riding that giant beetle slug thing was kinda cool, and… Hmm… that’s about it. Well ok, the end battles kinda cool with Gohma.

We get Zelda being bitchy, a main plot that would be a background plot on any other show (spring cleaning) and Gannon going from badass sorcerer to burglar with a swag bag. He gets both Triforces, something he rarely manages in this series, and yet gets his ass kicked by Link still. I mean if he was about to put them both together and Link interrupted him fine, but that’s not it. He had the two Triforces, meaning he had all the power in Hyrule, and he didn’t even seem any stronger. I wouldn’t go on about it if it weren’t for the fact the whole plot of the show, is ‘Don’t let Gannon get both Triforce pieces or we’re doomed!’ Yet Gannon has both and it doesn’t even make any difference whatsoever.

Oh also I guess it stars Sprite as she gets cursed or something, yet really she does barely anything other than shoot Gohma. I find it cool that there’s a fairy before Ocarina of Time was even talked about, but at the same time, she’s incredibly annoying, and yes that is even compared with Navi.

Overall a pretty average episode for this show, which means you can’t get any more boring.

The Legend of Zelda episode 1

Title- The Ringer (8/9/1989)

Having now watched this series, I can say I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn’t very good at all, but there were moments which I quite liked in the series, and compared to the CD-I Zelda games cartoon cut scenes, it was great. Of course that is like comparing the show to horse manure. Anyway, I went into this show with very low expectations, as it appeared, even for nostalgia value, noone, and I mean noone likes this series. As such, I did like I did with Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull, and went in expecting the worst time of viewing a screen in my life. In both cases I’m glad to say that it was better than I thought, and regardless of what critics and general fans say, there are a lot of worse movies/cartoons out there. Was Link in this series sent to Earth to live amongst us with some kid who steals all the limelight? (Sonic X) No. Was he transported to another dimension with beastials (essentially furries) and made to fight some guy called the High evolutionary who wanted to kill all humans for some… reason? (Spider-man Unlimited) No. Was he part of a rock band with his previously unmentioned siblings and fighting against Gannon with his powerful guitar? (Sonic Underground) No. Was he suddenly turned into a high-school kid who fights Gannon in his spare time by warping into Hyrule through his computer/his old grandpa who taught him the ways of the ninja? (From too many kids cartoons to count) No.

Sorry for the long list, but all I’m saying is, after having watched the whole series. I have seen worse. I mean all in all, it is pretty faithful to the original game, Gannon’s after the Triforce of Wisdom, to conquer Hyrule, Link fights him to save Zelda, Zelda is linked to the Triforce. It’s pretty basic, but it’s good we didn’t get any of my previously listed cartoon premises.

This episode is pretty much a basic introduction to the series and it’s pretty good. We get Gannon’s minions being their idiotic selves, launching another pointless attack only to be thrashed. Then Gannon disguises himself as a travelling magician and steals the Triforce. Gannon then tries to escape, gets beaten etc, also there’s a dragon fight which is kinda cool. Overall it’s a typical episode.

We get an introduction to the characters, who to be honest, I think are the reason this show is so reviled. Gannon is the most like the game character (at least the original) who’s dangerous and quite cunning, then Link who’s kinda annoying and famous in this series for ‘Well excuuuuuuuuuussseee meeee princess!’ and Zelda, who can be a real, real bitch in this series.

As I said, Gannon’s ok. Sure he’s nowhere near as badass as some villains, such as Darth Vader, nor even King Koopa, but he’s still not as bad as that frog looking thing in the CD-I games (the one who’s meant to be Gannon). It’s Zelda and Link however, the two characters who you’re supposed to root for, who are extremely annoying. The thing is, when these characters with the same voice actors appeared in Captain N, they were much, much better than here, but this is their own freaking series, and it’s nothing to do with the actors fitting into their roles, it’s the script that flat-out sucks here.

Link is the sort of guy who’d most likely be the pervert in an anime show, but since this is American, he always wants a kiss instead of something else from the girl(s)… He’s supposed to be a wise guy too. This is usually a dangerous line for any character, as it’s far too easy to go from smart-alec asshole that’s likeable and sometimes amusing, to unlikable, unfunny person who makes you actually root for the villains. Turns out Link didn’t even know where the line started, let alone not to cross it.

Next up is Zelda, who’s really quite a bitch, she uses Link in a lot of episodes, and seems to drop him the second some hotter guy comes along. I gather that she’s supposed to be snooty, but heck, even Princess Lana, a character I’ve always found to be pretty boring is more enjoyable than Zelda, and that’s not right. When you have a series called ‘The Legend of Zelda’ you expect it to star Zelda, be about some object called Zelda, or have her as some mystical elusive character. Here you honestly hate her from her first scene.

This is why this show is so bad and hated. It has two of the most unlikable main characters ever. Mario was in the exact same position as Link, he was from a practically storyless game, and saved a Princess, yet Dic, the company responsible for both cartoons, managed to do Mario perfectly, he was slightly corny, not even that well liked by the other characters, greedy, but admittedly enjoyable. Link is a perverted egotistical unemployed slob, who rarely is even likeable.

So why did I start off saying that I was pleasantly surprised when all I’ve now done is complain about the characters? Simple. This is a Legend of Zelda Cartoon. Before you think I mean, ‘it’s Zelda so it must be good’, I don’t mean that. I mean, it is a cartoon that uses the Zelda games, we get to see Moblins, various bosses and other creatures, locations and other things from the games. It’s still a fun little world. Compare this to the Sonic Underground cartoon, or even the fantastic Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Even if AOSTH rocks, it still uses barely anything from the games, there are lots of invented places, none of Robotnik’s robots look like any of the game robots except Scratch and Grounder (well ok, there were a couple of others but way too few in my opinion). I’m not saying AOSTH sucks at all, I’m saying though, that if it weren’t for the humour, it would suck entirely as it doesn’t even really resemble the games, whereas at least Zelda, despite all it’s faults does.

Well this is a huge review and seems to speak very little of the actual episode, but I always like to give an overview of the series in the first episode reviews. Since this is such a boring series, it’s typical therefore of me to spend so long discussing it. So overall a typical episode in a pretty boring series. Don’t even dream of this being in league with Fire Emblem, or even the Mario bros cartoons.

TV Screens

This page has all the TV screens I've made this far in updates. I just did this incase anyone liked them and wanted to see how the older ones looked. Expect them to be added to this page each time I make an update on a series.

Title- The great mission to save Princess Peach

Voices
Toru Furuya — Mario
Yuu Mizushima — Luigi
Mami Yamase — Peach
Yuuko Maruyama — The Great Toad
Hiroko Emori — Toad
Akiko Wada — King Bowser
Hiroko Maruyama — Goomba
Komiya Kazue — Goomba
Tetsuo Mizutori — Koopa Troopa
Masaharu Satō — Koopa Troopa
Reiko Nakano — Adult Paratroopa
Hiromi Ōnishi — Young Paratroopa
Chiemi Matsumoto — Young Paratroopa

Keaton Yamada — Hammer Brother
Junko Hori — Lakitu, Miss Endless
Kikuchi Masami — Prince Haru
Shigeru Chiba — Kibidango
Kohei Miyauchi — Mushroom Hermit
Jōji Yanami — Priest

This movie follows the storyline of the original game, and whilst there is a lot which doesn’t happen in the game, it still stays faithful to the games storyline. The film opens with Mario playing a game on the NES that I don’t believe exists, which involves various geometry equipment attacking a kid with a baseball bat (who coincidently resembles Ness and even possibly Ninten from the original Mother game which was only released in Japan… hmm…) Anyway, when suddenly, Captain N style, the tv goes strange, then shows him Princess Peach being chased by Koopa Troopers. Suddenly they burst into the room, with Mario trying to protect the Princess, and failing miserably when Bowser appears and beats him with one touch. Mario tells Luigi what happened and he laughs in his face. This is one of the strangest characterisations of Luigi seen yet (keep in mind this is actually Luigi’s animated debut, so he didn’t have any character in the games at this point). He’s portrayed as a greedy treasure hunter and provides the comic relief. This Luigi is the sort you’d imagine being Mario’s publicist, who doesn’t care if he doesn’t have fame, as long as he gets money.

Anyway, the Mario Bros now work in a grocery store as opposed to being plumbers, however they are often still referred to as plumbers. They also live on Earth (Where, it’s never stated) and travel to the Mushroom Kingdom through a pipe. Quite a coincidence. The rest of the film follows them in their travels through the Mushroom Kingdom, overcoming various challenges and having a final showdown with Bowser. Overall I like a lot of the characters in this film, Mario is the typical hero, but pines over the Princess more than he does in the American cartoons. Luigi I said about earlier. There’s a mushroom hermit who they first meet at the start of their adventure who reminds me of both Merlin (the archetypal wizard in the legend of King Arthur) and Merlon, the character obviously inspired by Merlin, in Paper Mario.

Then we have the villains starting with obviously Bowser. Bowser has a really strange whiny voice as opposed to his snarling giant booming game voice, or even the American cartoons snarling voice. It matches the OVA Mario films Bowser voice. His character actually matches today’s interpretation, that he wants to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom, but also wants to marry Peach as well. The Koopa Troop all are great characters, including Lakitu, Paratroopers and Hammer Bros. Also there’s a priest who seems to have a similar role to Kamek which I found cool.

Finally there are the two characters who annoyed me. Peach had a slightly annoying voice (I’ll admit I’m not a Peach fan at the best of times) and the ending was really harsh on Mario, I mean she spends the whole film shouting about Mario, and it makes you think she has more feelings for him than simply wanting to save her own skin, but it turns out that this annoying dog who is added to the film is actually her fiancé and she never even cared about Mario. I know that being rescued doesn’t mean you should have to marry the guy who saved you, but it’s the way she’s always going on about Mario throughout the whole film that gets frustrating. Then this guy with zero personality appears and that’s supposed to be a satisfactory ending?

Anyway, quite a few strange things happen that will happen in later games, such as Mario stealing Lakitu’s cloud, and it having thunder powers (it even has the same look as the thunder powered Lakitu’s from Yoshi’s Island.) Also Mario beats Bowser in a way very similar to Mario 64. Then there's the flying pirate ship...

A final point I found humorous was the product placement, I read a review complaining about it, yet it’s so short and silly, it can’t possibly be taken seriously, I mean Mario passes up a Star to stuff his face with Mario brand pasta. How can that be taken seriously.

Overall a pretty cool movie, with some strange parts. Some of the logic jumps a bit, but it’s still understandable and a fun movie.

A history in animation-Yoshi

Yoshi

It’s funny that I’ve always felt Yoshi was humorously never anything more than a glorified power-up or item. Don’t get me wrong, I love the little (and the original big) guy, but he was always just an item like a Mushroom or Fireflower you’d get out of a block. Since then, he’s evolved into a hero in his own right, able to take on adventures solo, and beating Bowser himself many times. In my heart though, I always feel Yoshi’s best when he’s simply rideable, which is why I’m excited he’s going to be in NSMBW and SMG2, and I’m curious, as to why people are angry he’s not playable in his own right. In my mind, the fun of riding Yoshi is greater than playing as him. And that rideable Yoshi, is the one who pretty much starred alongside Mario in the Super Mario World Animated series.

With Yoshi’s animated debut comes a couple of other animated debuts. Namely the animated appearance of the Yoshi egg (exciting, and no, I’m not going to say eggciting…) Anyway, two notable differences (even with something a simple as an egg?) Firstly the Egg Luigi gets turned into, seems to be an inverted version of the typical Yoshi egg. It has White spots on Green as opposed to Green spots on White. Secondly, the egg Yoshi hatches from in ‘Mama Luigi’ is pretty much perfect, yet for some reason they made the spots red, whereas that would be an egg for a red Yoshi, so another mistake?

Next up, we have Baby Yoshi’s animated debut. Don’t get me started on how since Yoshi’s Story, which starred Yoshi as a baby, he seems to have kept this appearance ever since, dropping his original lanky look. Anyway, Baby Yoshi only appears in ‘Mama Luigi’ in flashback form. He’s similar to SMW baby Yoshi in his look, except his eyelids aren’t half closed, and he has no shoes. Personality wise, he’s much more similar to the baby Yoshi’s in Yoshi’s Story, as he can walk around, feed himself and basically move around pretty quickly. In SMW though he would either grow up instantly from the egg, or stand still, relying on the player to pick him up and feed him 5 enemies to grow full sized.

Now for the main part of this article. We have Yoshi himself in adult form. As you can see, Yoshi’s main role in the original game was being ridden by Mario. As such he was usually portrayed as lanky, with small arms. I think that’s really about the only difference between the original art and the animated Yoshi, his arms were slightly more useful in the cartoon, although he still uses his tongue more often to do things. You can judge from the picture on the right as to how much lankier Yoshi was compared to today. Personally, I prefer the original, but I still like modern Yoshi too.

Yoshi’s character was pretty faithful to the game, he is a glutton, and also a slight coward, more so than Luigi (although sometimes they did both agree with each other about how dangerous something Mario suggested was) he actually keeps his fear of ghost houses from the game, and has a fear of water, which as I said in a review, may be reference to how he can’t swim well in the game. He also allows Mario to ride him in a couple of episodes, as well as the princess. In fact Luigi, despite the fact he was the one who first met Yoshi, is the only character to not ride Yoshi. Heck, even Oogtar gets to. The only real problem with Yoshi, is that he’s Yoshi, and that’s it, no mention of any other Yoshi’s is made, despite the fact that the game had about 4. It would be forgivable, if it didn’t result in us having the Cave people instead (urgh)

Finally the voice differences, which are almost always from games made after the cartoon shows. Yoshi has a pretty different voice to his cartoon one, the cartoon ones voice is a tiny bit screechy, however, the game Yoshi only says his name, much like a pokemon. When they speak in text however (such as the original and the Paper Mario games) they speak more intelligently than Yoshi does in the cartoons, using proper words and syllables.
